This #ParksOnTheAir park doesn’t get a lot of CW love! Despite someone intentionally jamming me for a long time I had a solid time playing radio outside. Worked Japan and the East Coast from CA.

Started at about 75F/23.8C, fell a bit as the sun disappeared behind the ridge. Had to put a sweatshirt on! No wind.

Still fighting the plague my kid gave me so the warm wx was welcome. It’s normal for this time of year in the SF Bay Area.

Still thinking about this. That was an 11,054 km CW contact on 40m, a band I can have a hard time getting halfway across my own country on.

They must have a great setup because I’ve only got some backyard wires at 10m (feedpoint) sloping down.

40m went lonnng last night, got 9L8MD Sierra Leone CW, first try! Marginal conditions too, I should buy a lotto ticket.

I think it’s all software on the 891, I’m not aware of any CW filter mods for it. That radio shines on CW with narrow and peaking filters.

My Kenwood TS-520 on the other hand, that has the good stuff!

Yaesu FT-891 is probably the last reasonably priced 100W, brand name radio that will do just about everything you need. Does take some fussing to get working with software for FT8, Winlink, N1MM.

Durable, tough radio! Small and light for field work. Only downside is menus but you get used to it.

Hah wtf do I know then hope the other locations aren’t as trash. There are bad barbers at decent shops. A dude at my favorite shop is usually half drunk and gives lightning round hair cuts to walk-ins all day.

Hard to say, but the mountain across the highway to the North and East sure caused problems. It’s a new POTA park with few activations and a 3-fer…few takers and no DX with good propagation.

You can definitely do it. I passed after using the hamstudy app on the can and listening to test review workshops on YouTube in traffic for a couple months. It’s mostly memorization, just more investment than tech. Retake the tests online till you pass.

I’m not a fan of the wham-bam haircut personally, I like someone to take a little bit of time with their scissors and the taper. Neck shave too.

Every rapid fire haircut I’ve had left some kind of mistake behind.

Without the small stations participating, the big gun scores would be a lot lower don’t you think? I thought half the point of getting all that metal in the air was to pull the weak signals out.

It’s the view and propagation from a summit that attracts me, plus the conquest ofc. Usually HF RF quiet too.

I do enjoy a good calm clearing though!
