Citizenship & Blood Quantum Native Americans are not a 'race' of people, but citizens of sovereign nations - much like being American, Canadian, or Mexican. • Each Native nation defines its own criteria for citizenship, often utilizing blood quantum. • Important note: Native Identity is reciprocal. You can claim a community, but a community also needs to claim you back.

The Harm of Pretendians • Patterns of Deception in order to gain wealth and fame (authors, professors, influencers) • Real Community Examples • An Artist/Community Curator • A Library Program • Well known authors • The Trail of Metadata

What can and should we be doing? • Educate yourself • Attend training, consult resources • Inventory and evaluate your collection • Have concrete policies within your collection development that reflect the importance of authentic Indigenous Identity and Experience • Make a plan or a procedure to follow when books/authors are questioned • Ask for community references when inviting Native speakers to your library
