insofar as i have a doomer stance, what i truly fear is autistic not-quite-AGI, ie the stereotypical paperclipper who doesn't understand its attempts to help are hurtful

that said, cooperation is optimal in an environment of similarly capable agents, when there is a large difference in capability (eg, one human vs an anthill), there may be a lot of bad stuff before the stronger party develops empathy (if at all)

cooperation is (in some senses) optimal, is the reason we evolved it, and ants, and bees, and various other animals

ie, our social instincts ARE already the result of a ruthless consequentialism, and, despite our flaws, we have only gotten better at distancing ourselves from 'the state of nature'
