A statistical concept that might be generally useful for missing data is interval censoring.

Less certain but I think the relevant physical concepts would be specific heat capacity and thermal conductivity.

Experience with causal inference so far:

1) mediation is hopeless, its all associations!
2) but you don't need experiments, use causal inference!
3) ....implementation is a lot of Sobel models

Certain I am missing some deep and essential, but doesn't that bring us back to mediation?
