A screenshot of a warning posted by a user on Discord. It reads, "If you see anything like what's in the attached image posted, do NOT click it. It's a confirmed scam and could (i.e. probably will) hijack your Discord account." Then the attached image of the probable scam is shown, with text that reads: "Forwarded message contains sensitive content. You must verify your age group to view this message." A link button that reads "Verify age group" follows. Then there's an official-looking message that reads, "You are currently in the /Teen/ age group. Learn more about age verification on Discord" with the last sentence ostensibly hyperlinked.

A heads-up for any Discord users. It's terrible that Discord will soon be implementing selfie and ID verification for most users to access NSFW areas, but scammers/hackers are making things worse... ๐Ÿ™„

A screenshot of the last question of BuzzFeed Arcade's Daily Trivia is shown. The question is "Who wrote 'The Metamorphosis'? ๐Ÿชฒ" with four possible answers below it: Aldous Huxley, Ray Bradbury, George Orwell, and Franz Kafka. My correct answer of Franz Kafka is highlighted in red, as if it was incorrect (it is not), while what it thinks is the correct answer of George Orwell is highlighted in green.

A screenshot of the introductory paragraph of the Wikipedia article for the novella The Metamorphosis. I've underlined Franz Kafka's name with a red line to show that he is indeed the credited author of the story, and thus proving that I'd answered correctly.

No BuzzFeed Arcade, *you* are WRONG! ๐Ÿคช

FYI:

Feel free to share/repost these Maniac Mansion prototype tidbits without having to give me credit.

Click on a pic to bring up the alt text, which explains more than what I can fit into a 300-character post.

The screens were output with a NTSC 2x filter in FCE Ultra, not native rez/color.

In the Maniac Mansion prototype, Dave is in the mansion's basement standing close to a pipe from the home's power source: a nuclear reactor. Green slime, apparently radioactive, is oozing from the pipe; there is a puddle of it on the floor.

Here's how to trigger this secret:
You have to do this before Weird Ed goes down to the kitchen to get cheese for his hamster.
I'd recommend having one kid in the basement, positioned near the drop of green slime, while another kid proceeds to the kitchen.
Enter the kitchen (be prepared to run from Nurse Edna if you have to.)
Open fridge, take the lettuce but leave the cheese and can of Pepsi behind, then close the fridge.
In the basement, "read" the drop of green slime (its name won't appear in the sentence bar.)
Your character will "say" the hidden credit in the dialogue bar up top.
Be sure to get the kid in the kitchen in a safe place before Ed arrives!
Once Ed (or a player) gets the cheese from the fridge, this Easter egg isn't triggerable anymore.

"Reading" the slime in the final does absolutely nothing.

And finally, the other secret, which I first tried to figure out several months ago. It was mentioned on The Cutting Room Floor's wiki as a line that wasn't present in the final version, and seemed more like a credit or a shout-out.

Thanks for reading! ^_^

A screenshot of the mansion's front yard and front door as seen in the SCUMM-NES online resource viewer. The doormat has actions assigned to five of the game's selectable verbs. Incongruently, there is a script assigned to the "TURN ON" verb. It will instantly load up the "good" ending of the game.

While examining the Maniac Mansion prototype recently using the online SCUMM-NES resource viewer, I uncovered two secrets...

The first one involves the doormat at the front door of the mansion itself. The prototype has scripting to be executed when the player "turns on" the doormat...

Dave has just entered the bedroom of Dead Cousin Ted. On the wall close by Dave is what the game calls a "Playmummy calendar", while by the other corner is a poster of a sitting mummy completely wrapped in bandages. Maybe a little too suggestive, but Nintendo objected to what they thought was nudity in "the posters in the gym [sic]." Inbetween the posters is a sarcophagus (with a built-in TV inside!) and a weight-training machine called the Hunk-O-Maticโ„ข (this may have led to the Big N calling this room a gym.)

Of course, in the final the graphic tiles of both removed posters are still visible via the PPU Viewer, but a little hard to make out as the tiles appear scrambled.

Dead Cousin Ted's room in the prototype originally featured a wall calendar and a pin-up poster, both featuring mummified beauties. The home computer versions of the game also featured a shelf containing "surplus body parts", but it was removed early on (or it couldn't be made to fit...)

"...It's full of sucker slime!" Yuck indeed lol...

In the final version, Dave (or any of the other player characters) will now warn the user when being ordered to bed: "I can't go to sleep now. We have to save Sandy!"

Speaking of Green Tentacle's room... here's a dialogue change made for the final, that doesn't seem to have been widely reported...

Dave is standing in front of a gigantic stereo speaker in the bedroom of the NPC Green Tentacle. Above the bed is a shelf with an audio component system and a portrait of Green Tentacle's mother, with a rock tour poster and a "Disco Sucks!" poster pinned to the wall. The programmers in charge of converting the game to the NES voluntarily removed the latter poster, as earlier they had to change a line of an NPC's dialogue to remove the word "sucked" (for being too graphic.)

With FCE Ultra's PPU Viewer showing the tiles from the final, commercially-released version, the "Disco Sucks!" poster is quite visible in memory, even if it had been taken off of Green Tentacle's bedroom wall.

Here's another of the changes between the prototype and the final. This one was fairly well-known (including by a young calf such as me lol) as a screenshot of Green Tentacle's room was featured on the back of the NES Maniac Mansion box.

Dave, the organizer of his girlfriend Sandy's rescue, stands in the second floor hallway of the titular mansion. He is facing a statue of an apparently nude woman lying on her side. The NES programmers mentioned to Nintendo that it was based on a real statue by Michelangelo, so the Big N said that it could stay... but only if the devs could do "something about the crotch". They wound up removing it...

...but its graphic tiles still remain in the code of the final released version! FCE Ultra, an NES emulator, has several tools to assist homebrew programmers, and one such tool is displayed: the PPU Viewer (referring to the NES' Picture Processing Unit microchip.) On the right side of the viewer, about 2/3 of the way down, the statue's tiles can be seen.

I'm not usually known for gaming, only naughty things๐Ÿ˜Š, so feel free to share these related posts without giving me credit.

The prototype of the NES version of Maniac Mansion is legendary as it features things that Nintendo wanted removed or altered. Like this statue for instance...

Three images are shown of a plush female grey and white mouse with large ears, wearing a red and white polka-dot dress (normally she would be wearing a white apron over it, but it's missing here.) The first image has her standing, while the second image is a rear view of her. The third image has her dress lifted up to expose her lower half; on her abdomen are two knobs (volume and station) to control the AM radio concealed inside her, while a zipper is on her pubic area to grant access to the radio in order to replace its 9-volt battery.

Trying to be a li'l more active here with a recent discovery...

In its 1983 catalog, Radio Shack introduced this Country Mouse to complement its existing line of AM radios built into kid-friendly plush animals. She was featured in the 1984 catalog, but by 1985 she was gone. I wonder why... ๐Ÿ˜
