The answer, in these places, is to require registration with the city council and a) prevent registration in the name of a company with b) no individual to have more than a couple of properties registered. This should drive out the professional operators and move Airbnb closer to its original ethos.

In fact, my best experiences have been in relatively untouristy locations (rural, small towns) and my worst in tourist hotspots like Barcelona, because they attract operators running a portfolio of properties as a business, charging as much as they can and spending as little as they can.

I’ve had many excellent Airbnb experiences over the years but by far the worst was in Barcelona, in an apartment owned by a professional (well, it was their professional activity, they didn’t demonstrate much professionalism) rental company (the biggest issue being a broken boiler; it was winter).
