I couldn't have said it better. The game itself obviously has some limitations (like only 16 wall types to choose from), yet the new map editor looks quite feature-rich and easy-to-use.

I'm also following this project with great interest. Hovertank 3D is closely related to Catacomb 3D, yet this source port introduces features I didn't think of, like this mod launcher. Very nice.
