University of South Wales cutting 200 jobs to reduce costs The university said compulsory redundancies would be avoided

'It said a voluntary redundancy process had now opened for staff in professional services and in some academic areas.' Plans to lose 200 staff do 'not include course or department closures, and could equate to savings of Β£11m.' Total staff count is currently 2,040.

Oh yes. It's nearly as much paperwork as applying for indefinite leave to remain.

No, but I imagine I will have to chase it. I refused to answer what I regard as an unnecessary question regarding my gender which didn't even appear on my vetting form !

Just filled in a fee claim form for examining a PhD, UK university. I reckon it pays Β£4 and hour. I'd have made more on a paper round.

Can you imagine the response from a UK university VC if you were known to have rebuffed a contact from a potential donor? See if your moral compass saves you then !

Maybe Starmer is channelling Churchill more than Trump knows. This quote is often attributed to Churchill: β€˜You have enemies? Good. It means that you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life.’ See how long he lasts.

Genuinely incredible that the U.S. will celebrate the 250th without an Archivist of the United States.

Why is it vital for the Labour Party to pander to β€œlegitimate grievances” about refugees, when the legitimate grievances of the actual majority of the population against privatised water and power services can be cheerfully ignored?

Images of an old silver 1999 Toyota Corolla for sale

You want a car that gets the job done? You want a car that's hassle free? You want a car that literally no one will ever compliment you on? Well look no further.
The 1999 Toyota Corolla.
Let's talk about features.
Bluetooth: nope
Sunroof: nope
Fancy wheels: nope
Rear view camera: nope...but it's got a transparent rear window and you have a fucking neck that can turn.
Let me tell you a story. One day my Corolla started making a strange sound. I didn't give a shit and ignored it. It went away. The End.
You could take the engine out of this car, drop it off the Golden Gate Bridge, fish it out of the water a thousand years later, put it in the trunk of the car, fill the gas tank up with Nutella, turn the key, and this puppy would fucking start right up.
This car will outlive you, it will outlive your children.
Things this car is old enough to do:

Consent to sex: yes
Rent a car: it IS a car
This car's got history. It's seen some shit. People have done straight things in this car. People have done gay things in this car. It's not going to judge you like a fucking Volkswagen would.
Interesting facts:
This car's exterior color is gray, but it's interior color is grey.
In the owner's manual, oil is listed as "optional."
When this car was unveiled at the 1998 Detroit Auto Show, it caused all 2,000 attendees to spontaneously yawn. The resulting abrupt change in air pressure inside the building caused a partial collapse of the roof. Four people died. The event is chronicled in the documentary "Bored to Death: The Story of the 1999 Toyota Corolla
You wanna know more? Great, I had my car fill out a Facebook survey.
Favorite food: spaghetti
Favorite tv show: Alf
Favorite band: tie between Bush and the Gin Blossoms
This car is as practical as a Roth IRA. It's as middle-of-the-

When I ran the CarFax for this car, I got back a single piece of paper that said, "It's a Corolla, It's fine."
Let's face the facts, this car isn't going to win any beauty contests, but neither are you. Stop lying to yourself and stop lying to your wife. This isn't the car you want, it's the car you deserve: The fucking 1999 Toyota Corolla.

A good society is where people have plenty of legal rights but never even have to think of going to law to enforce them.

A bad society is where legal rights are fragile or contested or violated and the courts are overloaded with cases.

A terrible society is where rights are not legally protected.

How the private equity industry views education is really alien to how educators see it. Yet these investors probably have a bigger say in how the future of education will unfold.

First, education is a *market* worth $trillions *in the future* making it a good speculative bet for investment...

In case you were wondering, the rate at which the days are growing longer is non-linear. December 21st was the solstice. The next day was about 2 seconds longer. Now, over 2 months later, we're gaining over 2 minutes & 40 seconds daily. This maxxes out on March 21st, at 2:44 gain each day.

Important insight. ALSO, I have no patience (and I mean ZERO) with people who say "they won't ban birth control." They will eventually try BECAUSE WHAT THEY WANT IS TO CONTROL YOUR BODILY AUTONOMY. We need to be proactive about BODILY AUTONOMY IN GENERAL.

For women, one of the very difficult things about the Epstein emails is having all our worst professional suspicions confirmed.

You wonder in darker moments if men say this kind of awful stuff about us (individually, and as a class) to each other, and here it is all confirmed in writing.

People don't want data centers polluting their cities.

They don't want masked thugs terrorizing their neighbors.

They don't want warehouses being turned into ICE prisons.

They want a living wage. They want healthcare. They want to be able to afford a home.

They want their basic needs met.

The Republican Party Has a Nazi Problem How did the GOP become a haven for slogans and ideas straight out of the Third Reich?

Intelligent discussion of how the Republican Party came to normalise its Nazi contingent:
"their party has laid out a welcome mat for an ideology that Americans once had to defeat in combat, at the cost of millions of lives".

Well worth reading thos review.

"Lucey argues that the system has now produced a cohort of academics who never experienced truth-as-sovereign and therefore can’t recognise its absence. For them, metrics aren’t a distortion of scholarship – metrics are scholarship."
