Showed a friend MYSTIC RIVER today - hadn't seen this movie in like 15 years probably. I read the book so much over the years and that went so much deeper. But Eastwood does great with this movie. What an incredibly audacious, tragic crime story. I don't think anyone did it as well as Dennis Lehane.

Anywhere with local government could benefit from local news coverage

Yeah that's because they got gutted by whatever corporate forces were far above the newsroom.

The murderers of the news are many, chief among them vulture capitalists, big tech, & neoliberal political hacks. But also playing our part were those who wanted other people to labor for us for free, or wanted to replace news with indignation loops. We are complicit. I count myself in this number.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing people local newspaper reporters are rarified elites instead of ink-stained wretches driving their Honda Civic to a crime scene so you know don’t have to rely on Nextdoor and the police press release.

Yeah I don't think you need to write out the accents. Comes off goofy. Make it known where they're from and just write as regularly as possible.

Last three eps of S5 MAD MEN were crazy with how much happens. I think it's a show that gets great drama out of just minutiae of life, ennui, stretches where characters are bored with their lives. It's all pretty timeless and universal when I wasn't sure it'd be either of those things at first.

I've got two seasons left so hoping they really go for broke with the suffering.

It's become a cliche to say things seem like they're made by AI, so I'll say instead that CRIME 101 feels like it's for people who don't usually watch movies.

Not trying to insult those people either, so much as boring movies seeming designed to watch while on your phone, with no depth or teeth.

Yeah I never get this - do they think critics don't enjoy any movies? It's all some weird anti-intellectual push. Very disheartening.

as a lover of b movies & AP, my biggest advice:

the key to a good flick is ✨energy✨, earnestness & commitment. For both b movies & APs, these are actually really hard to get, but without them the whole thing falls flat.

The secret to engaging in social media debate is knowing you will never win anyone over. The best you can hope for is to have people who already agree with tell you you're awesome. You might great a dopamine thrill from the righteousness of your anger! Fine benefits, all. But you will never win.

The "X is just Y" thing has to be one of my least favorite critiques. Lazy way of seeing things.

I don't know how you'd function without something like that to glom onto. It's just what I do to relax.

She was in favor of murdering kids though. Maybe different one than you think of. But we need a whole better regime.

Plot's pretty absurd but they actually do go for it with some teeth, and there's a lot of energy to everything it does. Not boring. There's a "fun" kind of bad movie and this is it.

Trying some new random movies today. FOUNDERS DAY (2023) is the kinda thing I'd always rent from the store as a teenager - just a schlocky slasher type of thing. I think it's pretty self-aware. It's shot like a goofy sitcom and the actors all ham it up with the ridiculous dialogue they got handed.

Lots of things are bad for you if you do too much. But also you only have the one life so enjoy it while you can. You could drop dead tomorrow even if you only eat salad and exercise every day. The puritanism around enjoyable stuff gets annoying as fuck easily.

2. your decades of anti-governance "free market" "government never functions" propaganda paved the way for the complete authoritarian decimation of labor, consumer, environmental protections

I really liked it. This and the 28 YEARS LATER movie are a really strong start for a year.

the Epstein files are really devastating because they remind me of how many girls and women miss out on professional opportunities, mentorship and careers because of how many powerful, rich and influential men only view girls and women — and interactions with them — through the lens of sex

One more comment on the Post debacle: this hurts journalism broadly. Good journalists will go do something else. The rest will be fighting for fewer jobs and everyone will earn less. Fewer people will take up the career. The damage done is to the ecosystem, as well as the paper.

The Rehearsal season 3

I never saw real snow as a kid. So as an adult I feel I skipped ahead of the old whimsical stage of seeing and experiencing it, so now it's just a general irritation as it slowly turns into white slippery mud over a course of days. I never got the thrill of it.

Excellent piece of work. Very informative. And I like that these ICE guys can't eat anywhere anymore.
