Strange, my experience was the exact opposite, it was the smart kids who were excluded and laughed at throughout school. The hostility seems to me just a continuation of a pattern that started young.

That’s why I support Gary advocating for greater communication. That’s where I see the left lacking—there’s an unwillingness to either stand up for our values or, if we do, to do it in “enemy territory” rather than within friendly echo chambers. (I appreciate the irony of saying this on Bluesky).

Fukuyama is echoing a centrist anti-identity politics trend (Sam Harris, Jordan Peterson) that sounded well founded, but ultimately played into the hands of right wing populists (by shifting those in the centre to the right via dismissiveness of “woke” ideology). We need to communicate not dismiss.

Kamala’s not left? Now who’s making divisions? (Even within the left). I don’t have a problem with the variety of viewpoints on the left, there is a place for identity politics to undo the historical baggage of a past defined by identity.

Have you read Rutger Bregman? His 'Humankind' in particular disabused me of many such false beliefs.

It's worth noting where you are hearing about the left focusing on identity. During the US election, I'm pretty sure I heard Kamala mention trans-rights about zero times (focusing rather on jobs and tax relief) while right wing media talked non-stop about trans-rights (negatively obviously).

While equity is important, equality (while imperfect) is the only real measure of equity. If demographics have vastly different outcomes (on important metrics that people universally value: wealth, health, safety), it's likely that society has missed something, when it comes to providing equity.
