The implications are profound, and go beyond TLR7/8: TLR9 uses the same basic design to discriminate self/nonself DNA. Together, TLR7/8/9 must be the key system to distinguish between retroviral particles and normal exosomes: evolution HAD to come up with a way to do this.

2β²-O-Methyl-guanosine RNA fragments antagonize TLR7 and TLR8 to limit autoimmunity | Nature Immunology
I am delighted to share our characterisation of natural antagonism of TLR7/8 in Nature Immunology. We propose a model where 2βO-Methyl RNA fragments keep TLR7/8 in check, preventing autoimmunity. > www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Gomez-Diaz, @v-hornung.bsky.social et al. show that mice lacking RNase T2 display an inflammatory phenotype in a TLR13-dependent manner, even under germ-free conditions, suggesting that RNase T2 plays an important role in limiting self-RNA recognition https://buff.ly/4jG49Gy
