literally right after I posted I took another look and sure enough one of the pegs in the faceplate was blocked by a screw. Totally wild a screw could go in there and give no indication it wasn't a screw hole but alas. was able to close it much more flush (still a little off but much better now)

update: I replaced the joystick and now I have a fully working controller again but the faceplate no longer sits flush and that alone makes me feel like it was a failed repair 😔

update: they told me the controllers are outside warranty so they can't help 🙃
