Liberal democracy is less a careful balancing of strong hierarchy with defined limits and more the use of competing hierarchies and bottom-up feedback mechanisms to moderate hierarchy.

I just don't think that humans can handle such a careful balancing act. Privilege is a powerful drug and the most successfully egalitarian societies have strong Tall Poppy norms.

In general though, I do think that we should reform our institutions to be much less hierarchical than they are, and any hierarchy we do maintain must be strictly limited and clearly seen as a necessary evil.

Sure, you can't be completely fair and egalitarian all the time, but first-year undergrad admissions is not the time to be so ruthless.

I think the future Fields medallist doesn't need the absolute best teachers to reach their full potential, that if the top universities want to ensure they get the top students they should expand their enrollments to ensure that they get them, and that any system that rank orders students...

Yup, basically their argument is "you should pre-emptively debase yourself and recant your opposition to us so that people who like you don't go after us of their own free will".

Not that I think this approach is optimal. It basically gives universities complete control over their own admissions by turning the first year into a de facto admissions test. I also prefer the standardised-cutoff-and-lottery approach, which is how we've done it since HECS was brought in.

Here in Aus, back in the universal admissions days, the elite universities used to take anyone who applied and winnowed out anyone who wasn't serious with a gruellingly difficult first year.

So that everyone knows there was nothing behind the outcome other than random chance. You can't argue with random.

There's clearly a side to this that we don't see. A lot of these X dead-enders don't see X as an active social space but rather they are part of certain private group chat communities that use X as a place to publicly perform their identity as edgy truth-tellers.
