Fascist neo-liberalism is destroying our communities and our ability to earn a living. This is an existential crisis. No amount of boot-licking can save us, so why not work within your community to develop other structures of support? Survival, not exploitation.

I'm finally getting into D&D (thanks to rural Albertan Satanic Panic being 10 years late and ruining my early forays) and this is the sort of thing I expect my fellow players to bust out during a campaign, okay?

Lived to be 100. I think he came up because I made an "Oh God, You Devil" reference and my partner immediately got it, and our kids were like...wut.

I feel like there were a lot of films in the 80s that focused on the experience of elderly people, but maybe I was just really young and I thought everyone was old. Any movies these days with elderly protagonists?

I don't know why but I was thinking about George Burns today, looked him up and found out he was born in 1896. He was in show business his whole life, but had a career comeback at 79. Wild.

Very much so. We can't possible "preserve" our own material culture traditions. We need sweatshop workers to do it for us.

They really use the right word salad to seem legit on their webpage.

Being a culture vulture is their culture I guess.

Yup. They get around the Indian Arts and Crafts Act by using "native inspired" and "native style." Hate it.

Ugh. We really need to clean house when it comes to this stuff too. I see this crap at powwows all the time.

Right? I want to know who they have beading these. My bet is Indigenous folks from other parts of the Americas, who are being deeply exploited.

Repeated lesson by guides on this trip: Always Maya. Never Mayan.

Maya pyramids. Maya calendar. Maya people.

There is nothing more culturally appropriative that straight-up theft and exploitation. Fuck this company.

How can they claim this is "cultural appreciation NOT cultural appropriation????" It's fucking literally appropriating designs and styles, nothing "inspired" about this, and paying people a sub-minimum wage (no evidence they're paying Indigenous ppl either) to hand bead them. This is exploitative.

Hand-beaded moccs for $150 and less? That's slave wages.

Oh your mom just happened to independently innovate a Haudenosaunee design? Anyone with an iota of knowledge about Indigenous material culture knows exactly where this style of moccasin comes from.

Please do not buy Indigenous "inspired" designs from non-Indigenous folks.

""The designs are not sourced from external Indigenous artists, nor are they copies of existing pieces by specific artists. These are original patterns created internally by our in-house creative team, led by my mother,” spokesperson Fahed Sayed said in the email.

MASSIVE score today at our local charity thrift shop. Donated a bunch of kid's books and got a 10% off coupon and found one of the kiddos a Columbia jacket for $20! Also folks donated knitted stuff and she got a super soft scarf.
