"Those valiant women became famous for their ferocious resolve on the line. 'One policeman can handle 10 men,' Lawrence's district attorney griped, "while it takes 10 policemen to handle one woman.' Journalist Mary Spicuzza reported much the same at the time:

A group of enraged Italian women happened upon a lone police officer on an icy bridge. After stripping him of his guy, club and badge, they sliced the officer's suspenders and took off his pants - a humiliation technique popular with the disorderly women of Lawrence - and dangled the office over the freezing river."

In my U.S. Civil Rights Movements class, we spend a lot of time thinking about historical memory. When movements get reduced to a few iconic leaders, the collective labor that made change possible disappears from view. It also obscures an important lesson: collective action is effective & difficult.

The poem is WATER FRONT STREETS:

The spring is not so beautiful there,β€”
But dream ships sail away
To where the spring is wondrous rare
And life is gay.

The spring is not so beautiful there,β€”
But lads put out to sea
Who carry beauties in their hearts
And dreams, like me.

In an Intense Election Year, New Post Office Rules Could Trip Up Voter Registration A change in how mail is postmarked could lead some voters to miss key deadlines, including voter registration. Advocates worry the people most affected will be those already facing voting barriers.

The Postal Service’s new policy for issuing postmarks could trip up some people who rely on mail to register to vote. In states that don’t have stop-gap measures like same-day voter registration, some may miss out on voting entirely.
