I hope this book can be a lifeboat for students studying games around the worldโ€”especially those who feel lost, confused, or misunderstood.

While I think anyone studying games can benefit from the book, it was assembled first and foremost for students. For the five years we worked on the book, I was thinking about my time as a student and how unnecessarily combative and competitive it was. I was always one foot out of #gamestudies.

I am sure I am not the only person who still prefers to read a physical book with pen and Post-it note in hand. As a grad student, it was so informative and valuable to my research to be able to physically hold and mark up books as well as accessing (and never marking up!!!) books from the library.

2) I've always hated the idea that some academic books are priced for libraries and not for scholars. Even though the book is free online, it is essential that physical copies are not astronomically priced. $35 USD for a physical copy is an AMAZING price for a print copy of a 780-page academic book!

Before I get into the chapters themselves, I want to highlight a few things.

1) From the get-go, we all agreed that we were not interested in any version of this project that wasn't OA. We did NOT know it was going to be 800 pages ๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐Ÿ˜ณ @punctumbooks.bsky.social is INCREDIBLE for making it work!

Over the past month, I have been in the process of both starting a new job and moving my family to a new city! Now that we are relocated, I am hoping to share a bit about each chapter in this book via this thread in the coming days/weeks! I want to unpack HOGS for you as I unpack my literal boxes.

I'm old enough to remember a year or two ago when both "we're not killing journalists that's illegal!" and "We're not bombing *hospitals* for god's sake" were major talking points. Violations of these things now no longer seem to even register.

also started reading this today on stream and the chapter by Emma Vossen made me cry.

"I hope that the future of game studies looks completely different. I hope that marginalized scholars no longer have to fight to be accepted. I hope that people see the work we do has value."

The military takeover of Washington is not a โ€œdistractionโ€ from Epstein. Itโ€™s a military takeover of Washington, which is an even bigger deal, and those of us who kill brain cells reporting on this stuff knows itโ€™s been an explicit goal since before the election.

My first keynote, "Narratology vs Ludology: the Debate that Has Haunted Game Studies for Two Decadesโ€ฆ and Counting," went so well! Thank you to everyone who talked to me after. MANY people said they were less confused about game studies, and one person said it was like "group therapy," haha.

There is no such thing as liberalism โ€” or progressivism, etc.

There is only conservatism. No other political philosophy actually exists; by the political analogue of Greshamโ€™s Law, conservatism has driven every other idea out of circulation.

There might be, and should be, anti-conservatism; but it does not yet exist. What would it be? In order to answer that question, it is necessary and sufficient to characterize conservatism. Fortunately, this can be done very concisely.

Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit:

There must be in-groups whom the law protectes but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.

There is nothing more or else to it, and there never has been, in any place or time.

For millenia, conservatism had no name, because no other model of polity had ever been proposed. โ€œThe king can do no wrong.โ€ In practice, this immunity was always extended to the kingโ€™s friends, however fungible a group they might have been. Today, we still have the kingโ€™s friends even where there is no king (dictator, etc.). Another way to look at this is that the king is a faction, rather than an individual.

As the core proposition of conservatism is indefensible if stated baldly, it has always been surrounded by an elaborate backwash of pseudophilosophy, amounting over time to millions of pages. All such is axiomatically dishonest and undeserving of serious scrutiny. Today, the accelerating de-education of humanity has reached a point where the market for pseudophilosophy is vanishing; it is, as The Kids Say These Days, tl;dr . All that is left is the core proposition itself โ€” backed up, no longer by misdirection and sophistry, but by violence.

So this tells us what anti-conservatism must be: the proposition that the law cannot protect anyone unless it binds everyone, and cannot bind anyone unless it protects everyone.

Then the appearance arises that the task is to map โ€œliberalismโ€, or โ€œprogressivismโ€, or โ€œsocialismโ€, or whateverthefuckkindofstupidnoise-ism, onto the core proposition of anti-conservatism.

No, it aโ€™nโ€™t. The task is to throw all those things on the exact same burn pile as the collected works of all the apologists for conservatism, and start fresh. The core proposition of anti-conservatism requires no supplementation and no exegesis. It is as sufficient as it is necessary. What you see is what you get:

The law cannot protect anyone unless it binds everyone; and it cannot bind anyone unless it protects everyone.

I think it's now possible to make a poli-sci course that equips one for modern political analysis better than most classic theory and has a syllabus sourced entirely from random internet posts.

So you can customize your character. That's cool.

It's a fun game and I'm glad you can make a character that looks like yourself. ..but I hate this type of baiting on social political issues.

What happened with Polygon today is so fucked. Vox Media has made some atrocious decisions in my six years here but this is really something else. And to do this in the middle of us bargaining a new union contract, where they scold us for asking for better protections, is just unconscionable.
