Besides if you want to start with "old" sci-fi, PKD is the man.... he's _always_ the man :)

The datedness can be interesting in and of itself — as LeGuin wrote, science fiction is always about the present, so reading paranoid 50s,60s and 70s sci-fi tells you something about the society they were writing for. >
