[an outline of a bandaged hand reaching out to the other side of the page] minä olen [redacted even in the image] minun olisi pitänyt tietää paremmin kuin odottaa... original twitter "tooltip": the idea to toy with using ruby text (translingual ruby text, no less) came at the very last minute, when i realised that "kuin" sounds like 庫院. although this kanji was not appropriate in the context of this short comic, i almost wanted to do something with "odottaa" and "踊った". i elected to just keep the ruby text to the first two pages, given the intentional cryptic vibe and open-ended nature of this final page.

何者か (ruby text: joku saa) sydämeni lopettamaan verenvuodon [outlines of an upper torso with a chest wound corresponding to the third left intercostal space, with blood dripping to a cupped right hand, elbow flexed on a nearly 90 degree angle] en usko että kestän sitä enää... poissa tai läsnä [a black and white silhouette of a figure from the back - the white portion is partially motion blurred] kukaan ei huomaa [silhouettes of two figures laughing at the other silhouette] ehkä se on kohtaloni. original twitter "tooltip": the idea of a "bleeding heart", both in the literal and figurative context, is something that always resonated with me. i tried to find the best fit to convey "someone" in the sense of "joku saa" in japanese (which i am considerably more proficient in than suomi), and figured 何者か (なにものか) was close enough. out of all the pages, i like this one best.

[outline of a human figure with shoulder length hair, partially submerged in water, reaches out to the reader] paikkani maailmassa on 消失 (ruby text: katoamassa) original twitter "tooltip": at the time i created and wrote the dialogue for this comic, i started to take learning suomi more seriously. i've had a fascination with finland and estonia (more of the former) since 2006, although i've been aware of finland's existence beyond having to memorise that its capital is helsinki, since around 2004. i do plan to write about it in my blog one of these days, but i've had a bad bout of poor self-esteem as of late. this time, i wrote the script two days before i had the time to sit down ad actually illustrate something for it.

a feminine figure draped in a pink fabric, hung upside down and bound by black, blue, white, yellow, and red threads against a blue background, within a white frame artist signature: Cardiac Arsonism (stylised) title: roikku syvyyksissä subtitle: uponneita unelmia original twitter caption: a departure from form in some ways and a continuation in others. while trying to tide myself over pre-eurovision grand finals anxiety, i knew that i wanted to draw something with the colours of the suomen lippu as a starting point. earlier yesterday, i just finished reading blood meridian. although i went with a different value of blue from the original, i knew that i wanted to deal with subject matter that harkened back to work i've done under another name. the threads sharing the colours of some other european flags is a very happy coincidence, and does not reflect any of my preferences for the recently-concluded competition. it should go without saying that although finland is my winner for this year, i am not always a fan of the entry coming from the country (especially not the 2022 entry.) why did i use such a long subtitle this time? i couldn't decide between which one i liked better.

this is the kind of art i originally sought to explore when i decided to revert to this nom de pinceau. last night, the idea of drawing something inspired by the twin fantasy dogs (which i first encountered through car seat headrest) came to mind just before i went to sleep. i wanted to give someone a hug, or any kind of comfort. subject matter flooded my mind was i woke up this morning. a frog and a bird, a rabbit and a wolf, until i decided to just let my hand work on its own. i just knew i wanted these shades of purple in this work. it turned out much nicer than i originally anticipated. i don't know if it can bring comfort to anyone else, but it does calm me down when i look at the un-glazed version. it served its utility, at least to me.
