the rest of his backstory , as i am getting lazy , may be viewed in the manhua or the donghua ( which is on crunchyroll ) or in the novel , as it follows the events of the main plot.

with those gods gone , he focused on his attempts to locate xie lian , as well as forming ghost city. his deeds brought him a cult following and the fear of the heavens. soon , his city was full and prosperous and trade was booming.

hua cheng won all 33 rounds but the gods did not keep their promise. to force them to descend , he was going to exterminate their worship. he did so by burning all their thousands of temples down in one night.

the conditions were that if they won , he would give them his ashes ( which when destroyed can kill a ghost ). if he won , they would descend and become mortals again. 33 of the 35 gods accepted , the exceptions being feng xin and mu qing.

after emerging as a supreme ghost , wuming renamed himself hua cheng. he approached the gods and challenged 35 who hurt his beloved xie lian to duels and debates.

the impact should have shattered him completely but instead his soul awakened. he faced a heavenly calamity and thus ascended to become a god but immediately jumped back down to remain a ghost.
