Turned out it was the encoder on one of the motors. The technician gave the machine a kick (physically, literally. I saw his foot come down into the lane and give it a shoeing) which fixed it...then the next frame it broke again. So they moved us.

Different center, still uses string-pins but for once, it's not the string-pins that are the problem lol
