Wolf Moon rising in Alaska over snowy Chugach Mountain peaks. Moon has orange tint and deeper hues. The darker areas on the moon are called maria, which is Latin for "seas". These areas are made of basalt, a dark-colored rock that formed from lava that filled impact basins on the moon. It took me years to be able to capture the moon as a photographer to show the details.
