Our sample approximates the Danish population in age, gender, and education, but is not representative. We only received data donations from people who use YouTube substantially. So, a lot of light YouTube-use and use from devices that are not logged into an account is not represented in our data.

PewDiePie and MrBeast are by far the most subscribed-to channels in our dataset. DR’s P3 Essensen is the only channel from a traditional Danish media organization that made it into the top 20.

The most frequent language in the videos Danes watch on YouTube is English. We found almost 80% of the videos with detectable language to be in English and around 16% to be in Danish. These numbers must be taken with a grain of salt due to the way we measured it but they paint an undeniable picture.

Table 11 of the report showing overview over the donated data.

All data donors combined have watched almost 19 million videos on YouTube over the course of the last 15 years. 3 million of these videos were advertisements.

A study of this size necessarily is a team effort, and I was among those who dove into the donated data. Here are a few highlights of what we found.

The donated data contain watch histories, on-YouTube searches, subscriptions, and commenting behavior.

We asked over 1000 Danes to donate their YouTube data to us and who they are, how they are doing, and how they view the world.

The report on how we went about this data donation study and what is in the donated data is out today! You can find it here: norden.diva-portal.org/smash/record...

Question to the void: I have a bunch of Youtube video titles in multiple languages and want to see whether I can identify genres/themes among them.

Any recommendation on approaches/libraries to go with?

There is no privacy without epistemic authority.

@meredithmeredith.bsky.social β€˜s talk on love, facts and privacy is still reverberating as I return from an amazing #38c3

Thanks for a great congress, itself an example of the power that lies in privacy and the right to define your own story.
