A more detailed look at individual pixel confidence levels

A more detailed look at individual pixel confidence levels

3. Pixel Confidence
New for 2025 we are including a separate raster that will give a pixel-by-pixel confidence level from 0(low/black) to 100(high/white) for each map.

This will be in addition to our regular accuracy assessments.
Below is what the 2025 confidence raster for NL will look like.

2. Landcover Classification

Our previous training data was stagnant & over time was losing accuracy

We created a more robust (& ideally accurate) method for this.

Our training data will be based off of a few national landcover maps that we will update annually so we capture landscape changes

An overview of BC showing where the AAFC Annual Crop Inventory is expanding to.

An overview of BC showing where the AAFC Annual Crop Inventory is expanding to.

1. Larger Extents

The most obvious change will be that, like agriculture itself, we are expanding.
Here’s a look at last year’s BC map with the red line showing what we’ve added for 2025. All provinces from Quebec westward expanded to some degree.

We’ve been working hard behind the scenes to improve the 2025 Crop Inventory map for you, which is partially why we are running late on the distribution of it this year.

Here’s a sneak peak at what changes/improvements to expect.

An always interesting channel to watch, but this episode from @techconnectify.bsky.social is in-depth, thought provoking and impassioned.
Worth a view.

In the 90s Jean ChrΓ©tien era, the local MP was a Mennonite who ran as a Liberal.

Lib voters voted for him b/c of the party & PC voters did the same b/c he was often more conservative than them.

He kept getting reelected due to this foot in two worlds strategy.

Carney reminds me of this situation.

Back in southern Ontario for a 3-day trip to gather examples of double cropping.

After our trips here in June/July we are revisiting fields that had winter crop varieties & seeing what is there now.

Today we were driving in the Woodstock/Brantford/ Kitchener area. #cropmap25 #ontag #cdnag

A map of Canada with dots in certain provinces (BC, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland), plus the Yukon Territory. These represent observations on agricultural crop types collected by AAFC workers this summer.

In northwestern Ontario, there is some colourful lines that show the route the AAFC team will be traveling this week (each colour represents a day of travel). A large orange arrow points to this area to bring attention to it.

There are red polygons over Quebec and the Prairie provinces (Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba). AAFC personnel typically do not collect data in these areas as we have crop information provided to use by provincial crop insurance agencies.

For the last 2 months, AAFC teams have been collecting observations in Canada to use in #cropmap25.

This week we finish with a trip to northwest Ontario. Our team will visit Thunder Bay, Rainy River, Dryden & all points in between, recording what's growing in this part of #ontag.
