Yeah, not with the weird moralizing about games. I’m stunned you finished twice in 38 hours though, my first play through was 70-something

There's a large group of (mostly online) people who value moral purity over putting in the work to make change. Skeptical of anyone who thinks the answer to society's ills is to withdraw from it completely

The secret to Baltimore's extraordinary year This April, Baltimore saw five homicides.

1. We interrupt this programming for some LEGITIMATELY GOOD NEWS

Violent crime in Baltimore has PLUMMETED to historic lows

How did the city do it?

Baltimore adopted a comprehensive set of "woke" policies, treating violence as a public health issue

A huge congratulations to the newly-minted DOCTOR @alyssa-laberge.bsky.social!

Alyssa has worked with me for 7 years, first as a master’s student and then as a PhD student. Her growth as a scholar, teacher, and person has been such a joy to witness.

She’s on to a TT position at UW LaCrosse!

Greatest book on research design for making causal inference in the game. Don’t think there’s a better example of breaking down a bunch of complicated concepts and giving you the tools to apply them (though there are a bunch of other good ones). Check it out if you haven’t yet!

Traffic calming and diversion work well, study after study finds. And not only they reduce traffic deaths and injuries, but they also have no impact on nearby streets because car traffic overall goes down (ie β€œtraffic evaporation”).

Excellent read. Claims to unbiased, objective, and apolitical research read more as a sterilization aimed at shrugging off criticism than anything good-faith. If open science advocates are serious about trust in science, not just faith in science, this is foundational.

Ineffective reforms are frustrating for both communities and police agencies. It's important to assess the pervasiveness of problems to understand what effective solutions might (or might not) look like. Open access!

Gorgeous! Petunias are one of my favorites to grow, definitely adding these to the list. We grew Cosmic Cherry Petunias last year and dried the blooms for tea - so gorgeous and bloomed through September, even in Zone 5.

Heard from two different people today about their NIJ-funded projects that are held up because they have to change survey questions (and go through approval again) to remove refs to gender and ask about bio sex only, two answer options. The studies themselves are not on 'DEI' topics.

Yeah. Highly recommend you look into NHGIS in the meantime. Inconvenient since you have the code using tigris written but you can get all the same stuff at least. Hopefully someone smarter than me makes a library utilizing NHGIS since *knockonwood* IPUMS is committed to maintaining these records.
