It's always great to sit down with The Australian for informed, balanced reporting on current events that is free from misinformation, disinformation or rabbit hole obsessions and cannot be found on social media.

Inside Meta's fight to change climate reality... all so it can frantically expand a risky AI program

Everyone is ignoring the science on what Meta’s generative AI investment really costs, even though there's no evidence of a single, significant societal benefit.

I always try to keep scale in mind with political action. This is about 3% of Italy's population. A U.S. equivalent would be ~10 million people.

Today I learned (on the Nazi site) that the first attempt to break Israel's siege on Gaza via a flotilla took place 15 yrs ago, in 2010. Israeli forces boarded the Mavi Marmara & killed 10 people. The youngest, 19 yr old Furkan Dogan, was shot five times from close range. He was an American citizen.

When was the last time you read an article on how Ukraine has fended off Russia for 4 years? Now they are destroying the Russian economy by bombing refineries.

The media is so off on this. Nearly as off as their climate reporting. The global military machine likes a powerful Russia.

Our mega rich are inflaming selves & their tools to make us hate each other. They depict anyone not in their chosen identity (β€œChristian” β€œWhite” rightwing) as a subversive, violent Other. That’s a path to bloodshed.
How are we going to limit the hate?

The rich must eat less meat ο»ΏScientists say rich countries need to eat a lot less meat. Will the environmental movement finally listen?

β€œFor the past 2 decades, scientists have…landed on the same takeawaysβ€”esp. that rich countries must shift their diets to be more plant-based. But that message has, with few exceptions, failed to incite action by governments and food companies, or even the environmental movement itself.” #EatLancet

Food causes 22-34% of climate change.
But it only gets 4% of the media coverage.

Why? Neglect. Misunderstanding. And a hell of a lot of greenwashing.

On the one hand, the Australian media is stupefying and actively harmful & obstructionist in their focus & framing

On the other hand, as @amywestervelt.bsky.social points out most of the public is still getting their info from mainstream media so we have to figure out how to fix this

Want to eat more plant-based meals? Maggie Baird, Billie Eilish's mom, has some ideas Have you heard replacing meat with plant-based foods is better for the planet and can be better for your health too, but you don’t know where to start?

Here’s my take on why beef matters for climate change:

β€œNothing else on a pound for pound basis, except maybe refrigerants, comes close to the polluting power of beef.”

That β€œdoesn’t mean everyone has to be vegan tomorrow,” but the goal should be to trim back…

Exxon to Cut 2,000 Workers as Oil Sector Job Losses Mount Exxon Mobil Corp. plans to cut about 2,000 jobs globally as the Texas oil company consolidates smaller offices into regional hubs as part of its long-term restructuring plan.

Whether or not we’ve hit Peak Oil, we’re well past the point of Peak Oil Employment in the West.

And even with automation to support exploration, drilling, and operations, that dwindling workforce spells secular decline.
