Thanks to @larryoneill.bsky.social @protectourwinters.bsky.social and others for talking to me about the science as well as the on-the-ground experience of this snow drought.

As I say in the closer, we can still hope for a little help from Mother Nature, but we have to prepare for a tough summer.

Western Snow Drought Threatens Ski Season and Much More Record low snowpack could have downstream effects on rivers, farms, and cities that last long beyond winter

In the short term, this year's historic snow drought in the West is already hurting communities and economies that depend on tourism. But in the long run, it could hit our farms, forests, fish and more even harder.

It's not in a union and can't join one. That's enough for a 6-film deal if you're rich and awful enough.

Absolutely the most pain I've ever been in. I've often said I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy, but I have to admit, the worstness of my enemies of late has increased to the point that I'm rethinking it.

Dozens of daily record high temp records will fall late-week (NWS says nearly 150) in the Southeast.

Yeah. I've got to keep telling myself that it matters, even if only as some unknown reader's distraction. But I do think it's more than that. I'm trying to listen hard to the part of me that decides to keep doing this. It's certainly not for the pay. Somewhere, I do think it matters.

β€˜The Evergreen’: Ghost town offers a window into Oregon’s multiracial logging history When Gwen Trice dug into her family history, she learned that her father had come to Oregon from Arkansas in a boxcar to live and work in the logging town of Maxville. It was once one of the largest t...

Today on @opb.org's The Evergreen:
Maxville was once one of the largest towns in Wallowa County. It was created in the 1920s by a lumber company to house loggers, including Black loggers from Southern states β€” like Gwen Trice’s father. We explore her family roots & Maxville's multiracial history:

Those three downed jets run around $90 million each.

It cost $20 million a year to operate the food kitchens serving 816,000 people in Sudan.

Power engineer here. They roar like jet engines because they are jet engines.

Solar plus batteries are nice and quiet.

Let’s stop going backwards on climate action!

I think I figured out the biggest structural problem with my longest-term project, and it's a relief that makes me think I might actually write the damn thing.

I have little room in my head for anything but sadness for the world, but I'm trying to do what I'd tell others to, and count the wins.

It's not complicated. If this isn't your line, you don't have a line and I don't want to hear from you.

I will never let them talk about "waste" again without screaming myself hoarse in their faces, and neither should you.

Nothing in human history has ever been more wasteful than choosing and starting war.

Eisenhower was right: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chance_...

Sup chat this is Slouching Towards Bethlehem with your boy The Rough Beast, and it looks like today’s stream could be a big one, as some of you might’ve already seen there are rumors going around social media that the hour has come round at last, so we’re gonna get right into it

The world could be such a nice place if we allowed it. It's all so goddamn unnecessary. There's no need for any of it. It's so beautiful here. It should be so cool to be alive

β€œHolding onto anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die,” I repeat to myself as I absolutely pour that shit down my open throat.

If you don't live in the United States, today would be a good day to tell your government to sanction and boycott us. Don't come to the World Cup. Don't come to the Olympics. Don't buy a thing made or based here. International law may be dead, but international commerce still exists. Punish us.

Sadly, there will be plenty of horrors on Monday. You're wise to wait to feel better to face them. I often go the other way when I'm sick and dive in and it only makes me feel worse.

So much thoughtless needless suffering. We can't just beat and end this administration. We have to punish it.

Remember, the enemy of the enemy is not your friend. Because a fascist is mad at a company led by a eugenics cult doesn't mean you should align with the latter.

Southern California air board rejected pollution rules after AI-generated flood of comments The opposition appeared overwhelming: Tens of thousands of emails poured into Southern California's top air pollution authority as its board weighed a June proposal to phase out gas-powered appliances...

They were going to pass rules to phase out gas stoves, until they received 20,000 public comments against the regulations. Except, oops, it turns out the comments were generated by AI.

This is excellent design by the spiders. If I was a bug, I would absolutely try to use one of these as a hammock and when they came to eat me I would sigh and accept my death.
