Western US snowpack is still looking BAD. Hope for snow, but plan for low river flows and severe wildfire risk.

Who COULDNβT use some good news? β Scientists with the Yurok Tribe say that two of dozens of condors released to the wild in Humboldt County since 2022, to reestablish the endangered birds, have paired up, built a nest in a redwood tree and appear to be tending to an egg.β

If you read it vertically by color, I'm guessing it means something dirty in Welsh.

It's been so warm for cities like Denver, Colorado that even phenological spring has arrived there according to the first leaf out! Wow!

As part of my strategy for surviving the huge, evil forces of the world, I think I want to start cultivating small-stakes enemies.
Today, it's the local car dealership that sent me an ad disguised as a 1099, which I put with my pile of tax documents and only opened just now, to an audible groan.
I'm not linking to yet another White Man On The Internet's blog post, but suffice to say:
No, LLM extruders *can't* do ethnographic research or social semiotic analysis
What they *have done* is flood the zone with slop that makes social science research & analysis infinitely harder than before
Since Thom Tillis is threatening to hold up Trump nominees over Noem's disastrous management of DHS, may I suggest starting with Steve Pearce for BLM.
I don't really care how he's stopped, or who stops him. I just want public lands in better hands than a lifelong gas man who vocally hates them.
The Dow is down 1,600 points since Pam Bondi said that we should all be talking about the Dow. The stock market is so very much not the economy, and our biggest problems right now are not economic. They're moral, ethical and legal. But even their one happy number isn't good anymore. Line go down.

Thanks to @larryoneill.bsky.social @protectourwinters.bsky.social and others for talking to me about the science as well as the on-the-ground experience of this snow drought.
As I say in the closer, we can still hope for a little help from Mother Nature, but we have to prepare for a tough summer.
In the short term, this year's historic snow drought in the West is already hurting communities and economies that depend on tourism. But in the long run, it could hit our farms, forests, fish and more even harder.

I'm trying to listen hard to the part of me that decides to keep doing this. It's certainly not for the pay. Somewhere, I do think it matters.

Today on @opb.org's The Evergreen:
Maxville was once one of the largest towns in Wallowa County. It was created in the 1920s by a lumber company to house loggers, including Black loggers from Southern states β like Gwen Triceβs father. We explore her family roots & Maxville's multiracial history:
Those three downed jets run around $90 million each.
It cost $20 million a year to operate the food kitchens serving 816,000 people in Sudan.

Letβs stop going backwards on climate action!
I think I figured out the biggest structural problem with my longest-term project, and it's a relief that makes me think I might actually write the damn thing.
I have little room in my head for anything but sadness for the world, but I'm trying to do what I'd tell others to, and count the wins.
It's not complicated. If this isn't your line, you don't have a line and I don't want to hear from you.

Nothing in human history has ever been more wasteful than choosing and starting war.
