The heart of the project went through countless iterations until I gave in and gave raymarching a spin with custom HLSL code. Faking liquid is not the easiest task, but it came out quite nicely! What do you think?

The idea was to create the illusion of dense smoke that evaporated from the liquid and collected at the top of the bottle. A tiling curl noise flipbook animation and a bit of subsurface scattering for translucency - voilรก!

Believe it or not, itโs actually volumetric smoke! Very localized to the inside of the potion bottle. A scrolling 3D curl noise texture achieves animation of smoke! And you guessed it, layering does the job again!

Actually neither :) I am distorting a flame shape texture with a flow/distortion texture (two actually to break repetition). I'm controlling the strength of the distortion with dynamic parameters in Niagara to distort it with varying intensities that causes these lovely flame licks ^^
