Did you know completing the square literally means to complete the square? I didn't when I was in high school and that would've made it so much easier.

Quote by Michael Morpurgo, illustrated by Chris Riddell: "Let there be half an hour of STORYTIME at the end of school in primary schools up and down the country. Make this the half hour they all long for, that they don't want to be over. Let the children go home dreaming of the story, reliving it, wondering." Illustration shows dreamy bookish child holding a book, bear with scarf, flying ship and dragon...
I totally support the National Year Of Reading initiative. We desperately need a culture of reading for pleasure to replace the culture of constant testing in schools, backed by proper government funding. And we need STORYTIME to be part of the school day, every day! #literacy

A partial net of a cuboid box together with certain triangles that fill in various diagonals. Specifically, the base and two adjacent sides of the box, then a triangle that lies over the base to give the diagonal of the base, this joins to two triangles that (when assembled) would be vertical with one giving the diagonal of a side and the other the diagonal across the whole box. Finally another triangle to join these last two diagonals together. Various lengths that become sides of the cuboid are labelled a,b,c so that all lengths can be determined in terms of these three lengths.
Gave my Y9s this diagram for #MathsToday. Picked a few numbers for a,b,c and then their task was to work out all the lengths and angles.
Next lesson we'll cut it out and reassemble it and they'll discover that they've secretly been doing 3D trig!

In #MathsToday with Year 8, we were finding the surface area of cubes and cuboids. Plenty of scaffolding in the first task to give the students confidence before moving on to more standard questions.
