Great to speak on the opening panel of the day about higher education and social mobility - improving access to higher education is one route to improve social mobility, but we also need to think about inequalities by institutions, and inequalities that persist beyond education in the labour market

I'm glad to see that the broad consensus around social mobility has moved beyond the limited focus on a handful of academically achieving disadvantaged young people 'making it', to the broader definition of equalising opportunities for all young people, regardless of background

Elite school students end up in better universities than expected, based on their grades | British Politics and Policy at LSE Students of private and grammar schools are over-represented in elite universities, but only part of that is explained by better grades.

Jo Blanden (CEP), @GillWyness.bsky.social (CEP), @Opmc1.bsky.social (UCL) and @LindseyMacmillan.bsky.social could explain why private school pupils are more likely to end up in higher-ranked HE courses than peers with similar grades.

I regularly come back to this graph when talking to people about how we’re in a really different world now.

And important to note that these are for EHCP only. There will be many more young people with SEND for these conditions, but no EHCP

We must clear a path for young people outside full-time education As GCSE results land, we should realise that training alongside decent work is a better next step for some 16-year-olds

We should not accept 1 in 8 of our 16-24 year olds shut out of learning or earning. Dreadful for young people, economy & society.

Purposeful government can make a difference - but it will require learning lessons, real focus & new resource. Me in the @financialtimes.com

A level results are out! And as many have reported, there was an overall improvement in the proportion of students gaining the top grades.

But its not good news for everyone: with London & the South East continuing to pull away from the rest of the country, and boys slightly ahead of girls.
