Acronyms aside, the comparison being made is about tactics and power, not literal identity. Both are coercive tools used by states to project fear and control populations. Different governments, different aims, but the debate is over methods and accountability, not wordplay.

Iran isn’t Venezuela. I’m sure planners flagged this as high-risk, and we’re seeing why. Regime forces aren’t likely to collapse without outside troops. Even if a new government emerges, boots on the ground would be needed to secure the resources and land that Trump and Israel are after.

Yes, China will feel a Hormuz shock. But interdependence cuts both ways: the U.S. still relies on Chinese manufacturing and some key defense inputs. Higher energy costs in China won’t stay there, they’ll be built into export prices and passed to consumers here too.

China may see upside in not deepening military support to Russia, Beijing’s aid has kept Moscow dependent on Chinese trade more than enabled victory. Its leverage is economic: soft power, markets, supply chains. It could even lean on Pyongyang, though NK ties have cooled since COVID.

Patience and stability are China's greatest allies in this moment. As the US and Israel continue to destroy the good will and trust built up over decades, China continues to act calmly and predictably with all nations. In an era of total chaos this is a winning strategy.
