Les quatre premiers jours de sa détention, Haitham a subi des interrogatoires. La suite n'a été que passages à tabac, humiliations et transferts d'une prison à l'autre, sans jamais savoir où il se trouvait. « Souvent, ils nous forçaient à nous dénuder et prenaient des photos avec nous », dit-il, marqué surtout par les suicides de ses compagnons. « Ceux qui apprenaient que leur famille avait été tuée à Gaza buvaient du chlore ou s'électrocutaient au milieu de la nuit. Les gardiens déposaient leurs corps agonisant dans nos cellules pour simuler une mort naturelle. » Coups, torture psychologique, privation de sommeil, lâcher de chiens : Anis Barhouma, 30 ans, un autre prisonnier relâché, a tout subi jusqu'au dernier jour. Au bout du fil, sa voix chevrotante fait penser à celle d'une personne âgée : « Ils nous disaient : "Il n'y a plus de Gaza, c'est terminé. On a exterminé tout le monde. "Ça nous terrorisait, on n'en dormait pas de la nuit. » Deux jours avant sa libération, son tee-shirt blanc se teinte de sang sous les coups de matraque. «Ils se sont acharnés sur nous. Ils nous ont aspergés de gaz, même les vieux, puis ils nous ont laissés menottés au sol pendant des heures », détaille-t-il. Capturé en novembre 2024 alors qu'il fuyait la ville de Beit Lahya vers l'agglomération de Gaza, sur ordre de l'armée israélienne, Anis Barhouma ne comprend toujours pas ce qui lui est arrivé. « Pourquoi ai-je subi tout cela ?, souffle-t-il, heureux malgré tout de retrouver sa femme et ses deux enfants qui le croyaient mort depuis tout ce temps. Grâce à Dieu, ma famille est vivante, mais nous dormons sous une tente, face à la mer, transis de froid. » « Il y a de la joie, mais nous ne sommes pas en fête. Il y a trop de morts, trop de sang, trop de destructions », ajoute-t-il.
