PhD food web ecology. I think fish population dynamics are neat and I live to monitor them...also supporting Indigenous community based monitoring and capacity building.

Fate and transport of environmental DNA: mapping the knowns and unknowns The use of environmental DNA (eDNA) in routine biomonitoring is transforming our ability to detect and quantify aquatic species. However, translating these indirect molecular detections into ecologica...

Wouldn’t it be kind of wild if someone actually pulled everything we know about what happens to eDNA between shedding and detection?
Decay, transport, microbes, temperature, rivers, oceans, all of it?!

We did that.

There’s renewable energy ads and there’s mother**cking wind farm ads. This, blissfully, is the latter.

Inside the ambitious Indigenous-led plan to protect northwestern Ontario’s β€œBreathing Lands” On the western shores of James and Hudson bays, a group of Omushkego Cree nations have been working to protect both water and land

β€œMost people think Ontario is all forest,” he says, β€œbut Omushkego land is so much more. It’s my home, my history, my people.” - Jeronimo Kataquapit

The Hudson Bay Lowland is indeed so much more to so many people.

I'm fine with these two as a good energy line to "overplay" in the first 2 periods (and we deal with the turnovers)... but i don't want to see them in a 1-1 3rd period.

We are currently seeking a MSc domestic student (i.e. Canadian citizen or permanent resident) to join a cohort of newly recruited HQP. The project will focus on developing and testing novel stream biomonitoring methods incorporating eDNA to assay community membership from microbes to fish. These rapid bioassessment techniques will be tested against traditional approaches in their ability to produce functional, community and multi-trophic indicators of ecosystem integrity and biodiversity along a gradient of impact recovery. The student will be hosted at Laurentian University (Dr. Brie Edwards) and co-supervised by Dr. Erik Emilson (Natural Resources Canada). Field work will begin in Spring of 2025 and will be conducted in the Sudbury area. As such we are recruiting a student interested in starting May 2025. Ideal candidates will have a strong background in aquatic ecology and an interest in benthic bioindicators, molecular techniques, and population and community responses to environmental change. Quantitative skills in statistical analysis are desired but can be provided through training programs at the respective institutions. Interested students should send a CV, cover letter expressing interest and relevant skills, as well as a copy of unofficial transcripts to Brie Edwards (bedwards2@laurentian.ca). Please include β€œCRADLES graduate interest” as the subject line.

The Indigenous-led plan to protect a vast swath of northern Ontario | The Narwhal After 50 years, a conservation project led by Omushkego people on the northern Ontario shores of James and Hudson Bays is almost a reality

Best of 2024: On the shores of James and Hudson bays, the Omushkego Wahkohtowin conservation project is almost a reality. But to get there, organizers have to build trust and consensus while facing down a federal deadline

Yesterday I shared my opinion with another academic in this new space. I wasn't rude, my comment was just meant to spark discussion and share a new perspective. I was blocked for that. I thought this might be a better place to have those open conversations, but maybe not?

Also, yes, I am glad we are finding alternative success metrics to the h index... but if a bot farm can be used to inflate this metric, it probably isn't actually much better.

Not to be the stick in the mud, I'm all for the "organic" sharing of science in this place. But do we have to game everything for metrics? Publish your research here at your leisure, don't share it because you feel compelled to "keep up" with new things being used to evaluate your perceived worth.

It's beginning to look a lot like #Fishmas! πŸŸπŸŽ„

That's right - #25DaysofFishmas will be on Bluesky this year! As in past years, I'll be highlighting a different #GreatLakes fish species each day in December, advent calendar-style. The 9th (!) year of #Fishmas kicks off December 1!

This would require folks to bookmark the list somehow to keep coming back to it, which I'm not sure how to do yet over here. There is a way to create a feed (like your "following", or "discovery" feeds), but it requires a little bit of coding expertise (which I don't have :( )

20.11.2024 11:58 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Great list! You should make it a feed! I'm not exactly sure how this works yet, but I've seen others create custom feeds and this list would make for a great one!

I am testing out custom feeds. For anyone interested in the output of ecology/fish/freshwater journals: bsky.app/profile/did:... list of journals inckudrd will dynamically grow.

On the personal side, I'm a dog foster, an avid paddler, and grew up in (and recently moved back to) the land of the living skies. I also cheer for the Winnipeg Jets, even when they haven't won 14 of their first 15 games of the season #gojetsgo.

I'm also quite passionate about partnering with Indigenous communities. In particular, supporting them to develop community-based monitoring programs, and leveraging western institutional capacity to help them achieve their goals.

We're all in this together, right? Thanks for the follow! For the past 7 years I've been involved mostly in inland fisheries monitoring and science, both gov't and private sectors. Most recently I've been interested in integrating passive eDNA methods into regulatory monitoring practices.
