People flinch. Not at the horror at the person holding it. Because it is easier to close down a voice than to tear out rot. Easier to say That didn’t happen. You misunderstood. You’re exaggerating. than to admit the monster wears a familiar face and passes the potatoes at dinner. Disbelief is tidy. It folds neatly into drawers. It keeps the neighborhood intact, keeps reputations pressed and ironed, keeps the world from splitting open. Belief is expensive. 1/2

Belief demands rearranging furniture, relabeling heroes, breaking heirlooms, choosing the shaking hand over the comfortable lie. So when someone names the unspeakable, people look for cracks in their story instead of cracks in the foundation. They call truth hysteria. Call memory revenge. Call courage attention. Because if the victim is lying, then the world is safe again. If the victim is mistaken, then nothing must change. But horror does not disappear because it is doubted. It just learns who will close the door and look the other way. 2/2
