Today I'm preparing to put my WIP away for a month while I work on something else. This kind of juggle happens a lot. If it happens to you, be kind to your future self with a little note reminding you where you're up to and what's next. Don't assume you'll remember! 🀯

a dog laying on someone 's lap with the words hopefully waiting ALT: a dog laying on someone 's lap with the words hopefully waiting

The strange thing about this industry is that there are times when it's mad busy and times when you're in a waiting zone and it's quiet. Trying to make the most of it. Christmas shopping is done. Edits back tomorrow.

I write down the beats of the chapter and few sentences of description or dialogue I've been mulling over. The very first line is important so I play around with it for a while, and then I stick a last line in that connects to the first. Then I write the chapter and rewrite and rewrite it again πŸ˜‚

Thought I'd do a thread on writing tips that I might add to from time to time...
1) I've cited this one before on the other place... A description of a person or a place should tell you as much about the person doing the describing as the person or place being described. Examples below.

I'm always so amazed by authors with other creative talents. Crochet, pottery, painting, drawing, baking. You guys blow me away. I can string a sentence together most days but there ends my creative talents. Show me your magic!!!

First DateΒ
Β
We’d so much in common, that was clear from the start:Β
a marriage of souls, like de Beauvoir and Sartre.Β
The connection was instant, almost irrational:Β
simply simpatico, fully compatible.Β
Β
You confessed you loved winter, north Yorkshire, and cats.Β
β€˜Me, too!’ I responded. β€˜How amazing is that?’ Β
You were wild about Wharton: you loved Ethan Frome.Β
β€˜His best,’ I said, thinking I’d read him when home. Β
Β
You praised a revival of Pinter’s Dumb Waiter.Β
I nodded along. I should google that later.Β
The discussion then turned to things that you hated:Β
Pulp Fiction, you thought, was quite over-rated.Β
Β
β€˜You make some good points,’ I eventually said.Β
I could always hide that poster under my bed. Β
You spoke of a loathing of poetry that rhymedΒ
and I said yes,Β
that stuff’s awful.Β
