E.g. why a digital-only ID? What about those who do not have a digital device? It can hardly be a universal system if it requires sufficient means to already own a smartphone.

Also, why pitch it entirely as a measure to control immigration? The benefits of these are manifold.

ID cards are normal and a valuable part of civic life in many comparable countries in our region, and beyond. The way the UK government has announced a new scheme for the UK seems designed to undermine what should be a good idea from the beginning. (1/2)
