I like the limitations of my magic system. The amount a wizard can wield is limited to both their talent and how large of a physical sacrifice they can make. Magic isn't something people aspire to or want as it will eventually kill them.

Either I'm a terrible judge of character or my kid is an amazing actor. 7am they can't speak, no appetite and generally unwell so let them take the day off school. 8.30am they're back to normal and looking forwards to a three day weekend!

I'm going to see how it feels killing them off as I didn't originally intend for them to die. Luckily I'm writing that scene over the weekend.

Hmmm I kind of have a brief outline for the next one in my head and if they’re not in it then they’re gone. There is one character I wanted to keep but their death causes greater antagonism between two characters.

In the current wip, I’ve a bad habit of killing characters off if they’re not going to be in the next book. I try to make their deaths important and meaningful whether it’s in this book or the next. #writesky

His other hand seized her wrist before she could do anything with the knife she had managed to retrieve. “My point, Rhiann,” he said, his tone still conversationally languid, “is that I have an interest in your future because my stars and your Rivers appear to be in agreement.” “Agreement,” she hissed, drawing as shallow a breath as she could manage, “on what?” She tried to raise her wrist, but he gripped hard enough that her fingers loosened involuntarily and she dropped her blade. He’d gotten the better of her too skillfully. Fury surged in her, but it warred with a leap in her pulse, too like a sudden shock of lightning, that she couldn’t explain. “I cannot determine.” He gave the handle of the knife at her neck a quick, deft rotation, turning it from flat to point. The sharp tip rested behind the curve of her jaw, beneath her ear, just hard enough not to break skin. “Maybe the stars do favor your bloodthirsty ways, and we’re meant to pursue each other to our pyres, like some doomed heroes out of the age of myth.”
