Most broadly, they struggle to convince people that they need to convince that they can and will help them.

I think that is a communication problem and a relating problem. I think it is those things more than simply a 'not the right policies' problem.

Progressives (socially supportive, democratically minded people) are not relating to our intended or hoped for audiences.

That's bad, because dangerous populists, globally, relate exceptionally well to their audiences.

But it's also not bad, because it means we can do something about it.

The UK local and mayoral election results of last week have brought me back to an inescapable reality.

Progressives (I'm using that label as broadly as i can), as a group, are incredibly bad at communicating.

View out over Watermouth Harbour, Devon, at low tide. A bright blue sky, speckled and smeared with white clouds fills the top half of the photo. Green, tree-lined spits of land flank the harbour (more shown to the right of the photo, which is framed in the left half side). The harbour has 3 loose 'rows' of sail boats moored by the waters edge. A slightly stoney sand beach fills the foreground.

Loved these table cards to get your order at the Storm In A Teacup boat cafΓ© at Watermouth Harbour.

Coffee and ice cream stop along today's Devon coast walk.

Polling stations are usually open until 10pm on the day of the election.

You need to:
- be registered to vote before the day
- have photo ID with you

I'm starting a low FODMAP diet today. I'm dreading the restriction.

But I am at last accepting it as the best way to investigate whatever is up with my gut.

But, as a patient, the support and delivery of info around gut health problems is… baaaad.

One of these days, I'm going to want to talk about David Lynch's particular use of light and sound.

Specifically, why I think it's different from how other filmmakers use them.

I'm about to see David Lynch's Inland Empire for the first time, at a packed Watershed Cinema.

Wish me luck!

watching them, reading them, hearing them… inferring them!

Telling stories, mind you, well, I'll need a little timeβ€”to get my words in order. You understand.

A fun fact about Pringles.

An even more fun fact about them is that they went to court to argue (successfully!) that Pringles don't contain enough potata to be a potato crisp (or chip), so they could pay less tax.

I do love that moustache though.

Lee Miller: the model-turned-photographer who brought the horrors of war to Vogue Who was Lee Miller, the subject of Kate Winslet’s new biopic?

I was motivated to see the film Lee after reading this in The Conversation.

It reminded me of first learning about Lee Miller's photography aged 18, wanting to record the world I saw.

I've just been to see the wonderful film Lee.

About the extraordinary photographer and photojournalist Lee Miller, it is moving, captivating, resolute.

I didn't expect to cry. But that's the wondrousness of art that makes things feel real.
