13. So there we have it. I’m proud of this growing series and I DO think it’s important. Why? Because it’s by a writer who’s also a very experienced educator and highly trained in related areas. I can differentiate, grasp the psychology of learning, I know industry & I’m a prolific writer. BOOM

And finally, I aim to offer nuggets of helpful advice on navigating industry & I am sometimes cheeky, scurrilous even, because a sense of humour is vital; so is thinking about different ways of approaching it all - flex; a creative portfolio - and feeling supported and seen alongside its rigours

11. This is alpha & omega really. ALL of these books are realistic & take into account that we may be writing alongside significant challenges. I do. I’m a campaigner and activist as well, managing the results of a tricky upbringing, chronic illness and additional caring roles, which are demanding

10. The Alchemy is a bestseller. I think it’s the voice. It’s me saying, ‘it’s alright my love, shall we have a cup of tea and a Welshcake and then knock that baby out?’ but I still challenge you and the work is of clear and practical use as well as entertainment. Well, hopefully. You be the judge

8. I write about making a work of fiction BUT, particularly with The Alchemy, there are things there for ALL creatives. Such as reimagining what aspects of work ARE. Have a look
9. As the series continues I’m also going to look at short form work and nonfiction. Excited about that. Build a shelf!

6. I offer lots of close readings ON sections from books. Then, I guide you to consider how these readings might inspire & inform YOUR writing. It’s critical reading but it’s fun and accessible. I love it & hope you do.
7. I take my own books and explain what I did and WHY: this is a unique thing

5. The books each offer different things. The Alchemy was a gentle guide to productivity;The Elixir, to craft. Lots of useful stuff and resources, hand-holding, and practical exercises at the end of each chapter. Themed chapters interspersed with essays. Let’s be an iconoclast, because why not?

3. I am BA and MA in literature and PhD in Creative Writing. I’m the author of 11 books and 62 shorter pieces.
4. Each book draws on my professional
experience, from secondary, to adult literacy, community classes, occasional
university lectures, creative writing teaching +workshops & talks. A lot

Two things. If Robert De Niro does get deported, he can come and live with me. I mean us. Then, there are a lot of people quoting very fine De Niro film lines this morning but FOR SHAME, ‘You can’t handle the truth!’ is Jack Nicholson in the best moment in A Few Good Men

9. Finally, if you find it hard that’s fine. Press on anyway if you are ALSO enjoying things. I’m really focused here on seasoned writers, industry folk and those who have a big platform in this area broadcasting this message about the craft of writing because I firmly believe it damages access.

8. Feel free to contradict me or say I’m wrong because it’s necessary, but also know that a. I’m not dim as mince - people gave me a PhD b. My 12th book is out on agency sub c. Illness, caring roles, job, etc, d. I teach creative writing but I’ve been in education for 327 years.

7. I think we become self-conscious about writing when people tell us how hard it is. Bit like me, weird little nerd-child, being told not to read big books because they were for grown-ups and then I couldn’t read them with abandon because I thought grown-ups knew what they were talking about
