Thinking about starting a line of handled bags that are specifically for holding other bags. Gonna call it tote-ology

Watership down!

Attract mode is all about cute bunnies. It's only after you have dropped in your quarters that the true story is revealed..

Do they all contain consoles? If not you could repurpose them for kitchen duty! Rice, Lima beans, Soup... the possibilities are endless!

Sesame Street made me a better reader and a more empathetic human.

Gen X would be in a much worse place had we not had our time with Maria, Mr. Looper, Big Bird and Oscar.

Joan Ganz Cooney and the CTW were given the opportunity to make something truly magical and focused on the correct outcomes.

Emptying the garage of old computer parts and seeing what still works. Haven't seen either the Windows XP boot screen or BIOS settings in at least a decade. The motherboard is a classic DFI NF4 Lan Party.

SwearSky Bluesky profanity, as it happens

Anyway…

Here’s a visualization of all the curse words being used on Bluesky in real time.

Each word is a cute fluffy little profane cloud.

It’s oddly soothing.

This situation will always stand out to me as a nontrivial engineering-related task that consumed way more energy and time than I would have predicted.

I spent a lot of time composing the feedback and figuring out how to deliver it in person such that it would land. In the end, my efforts were rewarded and I was able to work with them to change their ways.

Some of what my peer was trying to convey in the pull request comments had merit, but the phrasing they were choosing to use was beyond off-putting, and the nitpicking was off the charts.

They were having a large detrimental effect on the more junior devs whose PRs they were reviewing. The earlier career devs were having much stronger emotional responses to the tone of the comments. One cried.

Now, I've been doing this for awhile and I have a very high tolerance for this type of thing. One of the main reasons I needed to give the feedback was that they were in a senior position.

I once had to give feedback to a peer who was leaving brusque and dismissive comments on pull requests. The tone of the comments caused me to wince every time that I saw their username pop up in GitHub.

Giving and receiving truly meaningful feedback is hard. It requires both a level of trust between parties and a level of care that is often missing in professional settings.

A color index card drawing of Milk and Cheese, Dairy Products Gone Bad, shouting "Revenge is the Best Revenge". They are holding broken bottles and torches. In the background a city burns.

Bernie had just started his work on Grendel when I started reading the series, and through that I found his other work. The Jam always put a smile on my face. 😢

Love this. My go-to for this situation is:

raise "OH NO!"

Can't remember why or when I picked that, but it stuck. 😄

Those don't look like guard clauses to me, they feel more like business logic. What are we guarding against?

My one exception to "don't allow multiple exit points" are cases where we have no idea what the caller might send us and we need to vet it for correctness before doing the real work.

I just started a new job and found a first gen aeropress in one of the kitchen cabinets! No one is using it, it has a full set of filters, and the office has a decent gooseneck kettle.

This feels like it was a previous employee's failed experiment and I intend to take full advantage. 😀

The kid and I have spent the last two Saturdays at the Flipper Room in Concord, CA having a blast feeding quarters into pinball machines. Nothing beats the satisfaction of getting a five ball multiball or hitting that jackpot!

My now partner was one of the few people i had met in my life that could sing the ladybug picnic song with me.

All vocal counting in our house is to the tune of the pinball short. 😀

My family saw you at the Warfield in SF and it was wonderful.
