JUST IN: Instead of fixing the housing crisis, Trump’s HUD wants to make it worse by taking housing away from families just trying to make ends meet. We’re ready to defend our federal housing programs and fight to keep people stably housed.

BREAKING: Trump’s HUD is rushing to remove a rule that protects millions of families from unfair evictions. By skipping the mandatory public comment period, they’re telling us that we don’t get a say in policies that affect our lives. This will not go unchallenged.

Tonight, Trump will take the stage to try to sell us yet another agenda that won't fix our country's housing crisis. Meanwhile, his administration is working behind the scenes to dismantle the very programs that keep us housed. We're not buying it.

Rather than solve the housing crisis, Trump and HUD want to evict certain immigrant families from their homes. This proposal will hurt all of our communities.

Thanks to Trump’s new proposal, some immigrant families may need to decide whether to split up to stay housed, or face eviction and homelessness together. NHLP’s Exec. Director @shamusroller.bsky.social dug deeper with @npr.org’s Jennifer Ludden:

No matter what language we speak or how long we’ve lived here, everyone deserves a safe place to call home. That includes the seniors, domestic violence survivors, and 37,000 U.S. citizen children whose families will be needlessly torn apart if Trump and Turner get their way.

19.02.2026 19:49 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Trump and Turner are just exploiting the housing crisis to continue their power grab. Instead of setbacks, we all need solutions - including the 200,000 families and countless others across the country who could lose their homes if this HUD proposal is made law.

19.02.2026 19:49 — 👍 1    🔁 1    💬 1    📌 0

And this proposal would affect EVERYONE who gets HUD assistance. 9 million people would have to cut through even more red tape just to keep a roof over their heads, including seniors without copies of their documents, people with disabilities who have trouble getting IDs, etc...

Since these family members are paying more, HUD uses that money towards rental assistance for everyone else, including U.S. citizens. Without mixed status families, HUD actually loses $200M+ from rent they would have paid, which means less $ for vouchers and maintenance overall 🤷‍♂️

Under current law, families with mixed immigration status actually pay MORE for their HUD housing than other families do. They receive what’s called “prorated rental assistance,” which means only eligible family members receive HUD assistance, and the family pays the rest themselves.

Despite what Turner says in his op-ed, this plan would not get U.S. citizens off the housing assistance waitlist. It would worsen the housing crisis for all of us, with more money spent on administrative costs, less money going into housing assistance, and fewer low-income units.

19.02.2026 19:49 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

HUD wants to force immigrant families to make an impossible choice between their housing and family. This plan would force all HUD residents, regardless of citizenship status, to run their personal data through a faulty DHS system, submit burdensome documentation, or get evicted.

The real “exploitation” here is Scott Turner trying to dupe people into blaming immigrants for the housing crisis he's in charge of fixing.

A thread on how our current laws actually work, and why getting rid of them will cost everyone more time, money, and misery:

NEWS: No matter where we come from, all of us need a safe place to call home. But Trump’s HUD announced a proposal to tear apart immigrant families and kick them out of HUD housing. They forgot that we defeated this proposal in 2019 - and we’re going to do it again.

Black text reads: “HUD’s 2025 Notice of Funding Opportunity—since rescinded and shut down by a judge—was in the amount of $3.9 billion, higher than the $3.6 billion in funding available last year. But this number was deceptive, according to Deborah Thrope, deputy director of the National Housing Law Project: HUD pulled some of its other funds for permanent housing, instead pooling them into Continuum of Care funds that were tailored to prioritize temporary housing.

“This administration basically waited until the last minute, changed it, and now they’re saying we’re going to get funding up and running in March, but that’s wholly unrealistic,” Thrope told Shelterforce/Next City before the judge’s ruling.”

The Trump administration’s attempts to cut one of the most important funding sources for housing homeless people is making it impossible for service providers to keep families safe and sheltered. NHLP’s Deputy Director Deb Thorpe spoke about why with Roshan Abraham from @shelterforce.bsky.social.
