I think people incorrectly connect empathy with trust. Fully trusting your empathy creates a belief that your perception of someone's experience is the same thing as their experience, which leaves you wide open to manipulation. So yes, feel empathy, but always maintain the proper context around it.

I’ve been using a tennis court metaphor lately for therapy sessions. Sometimes people dump a bunch of old dirty tennis balls on your side of the court and then expect you to hold them and clean them. It’s important to take the initiative to gently return their tennis balls back to their side.
