What began as an unexpected color change years ago led us to a rare discovery: a metastable macrocycle with two Meisenheimer adducts, fueled by cyanide and stabilized by H-bonds.

A colorfoul scheme of anionic coupled polymethine dyes and their neutral precursors, uncovering a range of exciting photophysical behaviors: including ESIPT, photoacid emission, and NIR pH-switching.

The molecular orbitals and bonds seem to mirror the rugged peaks and valleys of the mountains, suggesting a connection between the natural world and the precision of molecular design.
Our latest work explores new reactivities of benzoquinone-monoimines, including the one-step synthesis of bis-zwitterionic macrocycles via transamination.
