Of the 34 patients included in this study, 20 patients underwent LVAD-only implant and 14 required BiVAD (including 1 TAH). In the LVAD-only group, one patient started with a PC device and was transitioned to a PP device. In the BiVAD group, two patients changed devices for the left-sided device and one patient changed devices for the right-sided device. Twenty patients were cannulated in the left atrium, including 13 LVAD-only patients. All other patients were cannulated in the left ventricle. The one TAH patient was excluded from the cannulation data due to the unique configuration of the TAH. BiVAD, biventricular ventricular assist device; IC, intracorporeal continuous; LVAD, left-sided ventricular assist device; PC, paracorporeal continuous; PP, paracorporeal pulsatile; TAH, total artificial heart.

Experimental setup. Schematic illustration depicts the bench model comprising two distinct circuits. The first circuit (blue) simulates the human circulatory system, whereas the second circuit (red) represents the VV ECMO system. The illustrated VV ECMO circuit employs a two-site approach using two single-lumen cannulae. The system integrates two Delta Stream DP3 centrifugal pumps, enabling the generation of variable laminar (VV ECMO) or pulsatile (circulatory system) flow and an oxygenator unit in the ECMO circuit.
