Github just has an easier workflow though git ( which isn't owned by GitHub, it's an open protocol) and by letting you do pretty much whatever else you want.

GitHub web hosting is still completely free, you know need Internet access to make an account and set up the site, their servers handle the traffic.
if you are in a position where it's financially hard, don't do it.

for those who already have Internet, and have access to any kind of tiny microcontroller or something, which can be bought on AliExpress, it's more a matter of them just being fine with a corporate centralized internet.
this is a bad take cause like, you can host a website on an ESP32 and you can get one for like 5 dollars.
also GitHub, Neocities, and ect. offer free domains and web hosting.
