Myth: You need to make your own cosplays. Fact: There is no rule book for cosplay. You can make, buy, thrift, borrow and it’s all cosplay.

Myth: You can only cosplay characters who look like you. Fact: If this was true cosplay wouldn’t exist. Cosplay whoever you want… in fact there is so much fun and discovery that comes from different portrayals of characters.

Myth: Cosplay is weird. Fact: Like gender roles, what’s “weird” is completely made up. Before judging cosplay take a look at what you enjoy from an outsiders perspective.

Myth: Cosplay is something you grow out of. Fact: There is nothing about cosplay that suggests there’s an “age-out”… that’s just bias talking.

Do you frequently hear misconceptions about cosplay? I think talking about this helps welcome people into the hobby who may be discouraged and also helps people who may feel pressured to leave something they love and enjoy stay connected.
