my mom's also been trying to be supportive the last few years (unfortunately her decision to tell her siblings a while back, w/o warning me first, leaving me unprepared to deal with their scepticism & questions backfired a bit, but I appreciate that she tried 🙂)

at first thought there was no way I had ADHD, too, the descriptions never sounded like me - until I realised it sounded A LOT like my mom & I didn't notice most of the things I do to manage ADHD stuff b/c I either learned from her or from finding ways to help her, then AuDHD suddenly fit better 😂

I hope you find someone to confirm it for you, & that the process goes quickly🤞🏻 (as an uninsured, currently unemployed american I'm settling for self-diagnosed AuDHD & my mom mostly agreeing with me when I worked up the nerve to mention it after almost a decade of researching 😅)

same for me - they diagnosed anxiety/depression (though no one told me about the depression at the time), gave me a prescription & called it a day🙃. I've spent the last 2 decades figuring everything else out on my own, & thank everything for the internet & people sharing their experiences & advice.

yeah, losing the momentum is tough - the change to middle school was the start for me, then a whole bunch of things hit that at 13 which sent me spiraling - but hopefully once he gets his equilibrium back he can rediscover what made going to school worthwhile for him 🤞🏻

it definitely strained things between me and my dad because he pushed, but my mom me do with things at my own pace as much as possible. I've learned that often the more control I have, the easier it is to deal with the anxiety - feeling trapped made me panic, knowing I could leave helped.

the school was understanding, & my parents & I eventually had an agreement that when I went to school I could call to be picked up whenever I needed. we joke that I was practically home-schooled that year, but the next year was more stable & I improved all through high school.

my biggest problem was anxiety/panic attacks. I went to counselling/therapy (which didn't do much for me for undiagnosed nd reasons) & anxiety meds helped. in hindsight the main thing might have been my parents learning it was anxiety (not tantrums/stubbornness) & giving me some leeway.

🫂 I went through that at 13, too. 8th grade was pretty much a write-off for me & I know it wasn't easy on my parents.
