Prey is famous for its adaptation by Dan Curtis for the TV movie, Trilogy of Terror, in 1975, starring Karen Black. Trilogy of Terror adapted three of Matheson's stories, with Black playing the female lead in all three.

Originally released in Playboy and Matheson's collection, Shock Waves, in 1969. Prey follows Amelia, who buys a Zuni fetish doll for her boyfriend; she accidentally removes a gold chain wrapped around the doll and the bastard comes to life. This is a masterclass of suspense.

The story is famous for being featured on the fifth season of The Twilight Zone and The Twilight Zone movie featuring William Shatner and John Lithgow, respectively. The Twilight Zone episode is easily in my top five episodes.

The story follows Arthur Wilson as he is flying to California. It's apparent early in the story that Wilson has an anxiety about flying; well, Wilson starts to see an apparition on the wing, and every time he's about to show someone it's there, it vanishes.

I love Richard Matheson, and I love this short story. It was the third best of the collection, and showcases why Matheson was one of the best short story writers. That's why his Twilight Zone episodes are some of the best. Until next week, happy readings.
