I wasn't skeptical about the quality of this manga when we began but I was definitely not expecting it to be as good as it is. From my experience reading the Pokémon Adventures manga series, it seemed to me that using an IP to tell a story could either make or break the story you're trying to tell. A lot of the times there were instances where themes were really dumbed down, as the manga were probably written for a younger audience. Not bad by any means, but because of that, I kind of expected this manga to be very light hearted and take the low road and play it safe... Boy was I happily proven wrong. The story follows the plot of the games for the most part and diverges into original content at moments that feel like they've always belonged. Akira Himekawa (made up of A. Honda and S. Nagano) really knew how to take a blank slate character like Link and make him a very conflicted and, I would argue, tragic hero to a degree. Without spoiling anything the way they incorporate events and give Link a voice that doesn't fall into the usual Shonen protagonist tropes but instead show him as an ACTUAL character with dreams and fears really, really REALLY elevated the reading experience. They chose to give him a backstory to help explain why he's different from the rest of Ordon Village and explain his anxiety and fear in the beginning that ended up circling back around in a very natural and satisfying way, so not only did it not feel like cringe fanfiction but it succeeded at deepening Link's humanity and believability as a character. There's an entire section that just doesn't happen in the games where Link has to comfort a character who's whole village was destroyed while realizing that the only way he can stop things like this happening is by sucking it up and accepting his role as the chosen hero. All the laughter, sorrow, joy, hate... every single bit of it was written in such a compelling way. It felt deserved. Artwork was top notch too, I got so many good screenshot…
