The decision of the CM to close the supervision of asylum procedures marks the loss of a critical mechanism of oversight into a defective and dehumanising system, at a time when the right of access to asylum is facing steady political erosion.

These include unstable access to asylum, chronic delays in asylum procedures, frequent technical issues with the online registration platform, the arbitrary use of the 'safe third country' concept, and issues with the effectiveness and accessibility of appeals procedures, among others.

✅ We appreciate the decision of the CM to continue monitoring living and detention conditions, and the lack of effective remedies.

❌We regret, however, the decision to stop monitoring asylum procedures, despite civil society repeatedly warning about serious flaws in Greece’s asylum system.

Enough is enough. We strongly urge the reversal of these measures, and expect Greek authorities and EU institutions to demonstrate commitment to the rights and values that bind us.

On 11 July, the Greek gov adopted a new law suspending asylum processing for 3 months, in addition to ordering the summary arrest, detention and deportation of all new arrivals. These amount to flagrant violations of EU and international law.

💪 It is NOT a moment to be discouraged, however. Rather, now more than ever, Greek and EU officials must recall that seeking asylum is a human right, and must uphold their legal obligations to ensure that all people live in safety and dignity.

Systemic procedural delays, evictions from camps, reduced support from civil society due to funding and capacity cuts as well as hostile legal developments at national and EU level are but a few of the challenges they face.

World Refugee Day 2025 arrives in the midst of deep (geo)political uncertainty and an increasingly hostile environment for refugees in Greece:

The EU wants to expand deportations, including of children.

The new DeportationRegulation fuels detention, criminalization, and digital surveillance.

As the #ProtectNotSurveil coalition, we call on the EU to withdraw its proposal.

With 30 NGOs, we call on the MoMA to:
❗ Rescind the eviction order
❗ Ensure access to safe housing alternatives to prevent destitution & enable access to rights
❗ Implement a sustainable & dignified support & integration framework ensuring suitable accommodation irrespective of legal status

Combined with various issues accessing support outside camps, the order risks exposing various groups to homelessness and destitution, threatening their fundamental rights including human dignity.

Last month, the Ministry ordered the eviction of beneficiaries of International Protection and rejected asylum seekers from refugee camps across Greece. No guidance on alternative accommodation solutions was provided.

📢 JOINT NGO STATEMENT: The Greek Ministry of Migration and Asylum must rescind the eviction order of people on the move from camps.

We call on the Ministry to:
❗ Rescind the eviction order
❗ Ensure access to safe & appropriate housing alternatives to prevent destitution & enable access to rights
❗ Implement a sustainable & dignified framework of support & integration ensuring suitable accommodation irrespective of legal status.
