We have a family member in a housing co-op. The building has two or three rooms for guests, no charge, you just need to book ahead of time. It’s never been unavailable when we needed it, it seems like a great alternative to buying a bigger house just for hosting guests occasionally.

We stayed in a dorm used like this in Toronto when we were there during the summer, it was great. Extra nice that we had multiple rooms and a small kitchen.

I have two little guys in the age range you’re looking at, read to them every night. I see you’ve already got some good volunteers but I’d be happy to give it a read as well if you want more feedback.

Noticing a striking lack of consistency in how Canadian media refers to the actions of the US-Israeli military in Iran

Even at the same outlet, you see it described as β€œairstrikes,” a ”conflict” and as a β€œwar” – at this point, I think we can call what’s happening a β€œwar”

Is that supposed to be a handshake? It’s so awkwardly posed I’m genuinely not sure if it’s supposed to be something else.

Thou Shalt Not Try to Start Armageddon Stop it.

U.S. commanders explicitly told troops the war on Iran is a β€˜Christian war to bring about Armageddon and the return of Jesus.’

This is so frustrating! Mine has taken to aggressively trying to de-capitalize every i that it can.

At the expense of sounding crotchety,I can’t remember this ever being a problem in the T9 days. I was pretty impressed with how well its auto-complete worked.

My late father was a little obsessed with Iranian politics (despite not being Iranian). He taught me from a young age about democratically elected Mosaddegh, who was toppled by the USA to install the oppressive Shah, which led directly to the Islamic Republic. Mosaddegh was nationalizing the oil.

I’m from Sask- there were some annoyances dealing with time changes because we were near the AB border, but we were on the same time for half the year.

Overall, not changing the time was great. I miss it and I complain about changing the clocks every time I had to. 15 years, till not used to it.

Look at these Centretown Drain Heroes! Help avoid flooding and chip away at the snow and ice blocking your sewer grates. It’s weirdly fun and satisfying when you do it with neighbours.

I didn’t know there was a novel, I’ll have to read it now!

I rewatched The Cowboys so long ago that I don’t remember how good it is, but it stands out as a western where people in cowboy hats actually have to deal with cows… like Lonesome Dove, or City Slickers. Not so many cowboy movies with cows.

Agriculture Is Taking Over Grasslands, Wetlands and Other Overlooked Ecosystems A new study reveals that agriculture is rapidly replacing ecosystems like grasslands, wetlands and savannas, which are often ignored in sustainability policies.

Important new @worldresources.bsky.social research shows that agricultural expansion isn’t only leading to forest loss - it’s leading to loss of grasslands, savannas, & wetlands too.

From 2005-20, the 🌎 lost 95 Mha of non-forest natural ecosystems to annual crops, and another 95 Mha to pasture. 1/

Analysis of crash data shows that you're 17 times more likely to die in a vehicle fire if you buy Elon Musk's Tesla Cyber truck than if you had bought a Ford Pinto, the 1970s era car infamous for gas tank explosions in rear end collisions.

Nobody is divided. Media needs to stop with this nonsense. Everyone is on the women's side. Only a handful of right-wing zealots with oversized platforms amplified by bots see it differently.

Today is the 4th anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. But Russia started this war 12 years ago with the occupation of Crimea, also in February. You can talk as much as you want about Ukraine's resilience and courage, but I want to talk about fatigue

Ukrainian border guard looking up the road at incoming Russian forces

Four years ago, the Russian ground invasion of Ukraine began.

CCTV footage captured the moment a Ukrainian border guard first saw incoming Russian forces.

Today, Kyiv remains in Ukrainian hands, and the nation of Ukraine survives thanks to the courage and creativity of its people.

Slava Ukraini.

One mile on a bike is a $.42 economic gain to society, one mile driving is a $.20 loss Copenhagen, the bicycle-friendliest place on the planet, publishes a biannual Bicycle Account, and buried in its pages is a rather astonishing fact.

β€œOne mile on a bike is a $.42 economic gain to society, one mile driving is a $.20 loss.”

β€œWhich means that Copenhagen, a city of 1.2 million people, saves $357 million a year on health costs because something like 80% of its population commutes by bike.” #CityMakingMath

Some costs aren’t costs.

Watching the game at Bowness Pub in Calgary and every time the US goalie makes yet another amazing save a dude here yells at the top of his lungs, "Fuck you Hellebuyck, you magnificent bastard!" and as a lifelong Winnipeg Jets fan, man, I get it.

Absolutely! When I trained with ambulance services there were always angry jokes about how every blizzard idiots would drive on closed roads and then emergency services would have to go drive on the closed roads to rescue them.

Lots of confusion over all season tires vs winter tires, plus 4x4s.

When I was a teen there was a blizzard a few days after I got an intense winter parka so I tested it by walking at night across the super long walking bridge where I livedβ€” a massive trestle bridge, decommissioned railwayβ€” it was great, wildly isolating, no sound but howling winds.

Does Finland provide a lot of financial support for athletes to train and compete?

Canada does a poor job of helping athletes train. It’s been a problem for a while but there was one article this games that really clearly showed how much more other countries spend on their athletes.

It’s kind of ridiculous, but the province I live in is allowing bars to open and serve alcohol at 06:00 tomorrow morning to watch the game.

I think that’s too early for me to put back a RedBull but it’s the right time of day for a ton of coffee at least.
